Final Wrap Up of the 2024/25 Capital Athletics Open & Under 20 Championships

The 2024/25 Capital Athletics Open & U20s Championships concluded in spectacular fashion after three days of high-performance athletics at the AIS Athletics Track. Athletes from the ACT, across Australia, and international competitors delivered extraordinary performances throughout the meet.

Day 1: Records and World-Class Performances

The Championships opened with a bang as records tumbled and athletes delivered world-class performances. Lachie Kennedy stole the spotlight, breaking the Australian 60m record twice in one day with a scorching 6.43 seconds (+1.6), making him the equal 10th fastest in history. Joshua Azzopardi (6.52 seconds) and Jacob Despard (6.55 seconds) also earned their places for the World Indoor Championships.

Para athlete Summer Giddings captivated the crowd in the T35 long jump with a leap of 3.19 meters, a potential world record. International competitors also set national records, further highlighting the event's global prestige.

Day 2: Excitement Builds and Honours Bestowed

Day 2 continued the excitement with standout performances from a number of ACT athletes. In the U20 Men’s 100m Final, ACT’s Ryan Knight and Tobi Drummond-Templeton represented the territory, competing fiercely among top contenders, including eventual winner Sebastiano Luca.

In the U20 Women’s 100m and 400m Hurdles, ACT’s Winnie Herring delivered outstanding performances, securing a bronze medal in the 100m hurdles and a silver in the 400m hurdles.

ACT’s Ari Gesini shone in the Men's Para Long Jump, clinching the gold medal with an exceptional performance.

The evening featured a special moment as Neil Boden was awarded Athletics Australia Life Membership, including a recognition of his 21 years of service to ACT athletics. The award was presented by Denis Wilson, Athletics Australia Life Governor, and acknowledged by Capital Athletics President James Lennane. Neil was joined by his wife, Kerry, and daughter, Lauren, in celebrating this honour.

The day concluded with thrilling 1500m events. In the Open Division, ACT’s Rachel McCormick showcased her strength and strategy, securing a bronze medal. In the U20 Division, ACT’s Daniel Randall demonstrated resilience, also earning a bronze medal.

Day 3: A Grand Finale

The final day of the Championships was nothing short of spectacular, delivering a grand finale that celebrated the spirit of athletics and the determination of the competitors. The AIS Athletics Track buzzed with excitement as the crowd eagerly anticipated the climactic events of the weekend.

ACT’s Sierra Jaques delivered a commendable performance in the 200m, securing a bronze medal in a tightly contested race. Her grit and determination were evident as she powered down the track, showcasing her athleticism and competitive spirit.

Misha Van Scheppingen was a standout in the Open Men’s Pole Vault, setting a new ACT record and earning a bronze medal. The crowd erupted in applause as he cleared the bar with precision and confidence, cementing his place in ACT athletics history.

Canberra’s Tim Fraser mixed it with some of the world's best in the Supernova 10,000m Walk, finishing 5th against a highly competitive international field. His performance highlighted the depth of talent within the ACT and underscored the global calibre of the Championships.

As the Championships drew to a close, the sense of camaraderie and celebration was palpable. Athletes, coaches, and spectators alike reflected on a weekend of extraordinary achievements and unforgettable moments.
