Celebrating Coach Ruud van Scheppingen

Meet Accredited Coach Ruud van Scheppingen, the dynamic force driving athletics in the ACT. If you swing by Corroboree Athletics Club on a Saturday, you’ll find Ruud in action. Whether it’s coaching U6 Shot Put, guiding Seniors in Javelin, managing U13 Triple Jump, starting races, or even advising parents on officiating, there’s nothing this accomplished Life Member doesn’t do. With a resume boasting years as the ALAC Head Coach for the ACT and roles in the Target Talent Program and Emerging Athlete Squads, Ruud is the epitome of dedication and versatility in the sport.

The Joy of Club Life

For Ruud, being part of a club is more than just coaching—it’s a family affair. From the roots in Amsterdam, where the athletics club fostered a family-friendly environment, to finding a similar ethos in Canberra with Corroboree Athletics, it’s always been about fun, fitness, and friendly competition. “I’m very lucky to have found a similar club in Canberra when we moved to Australia and our kids joined Little Athletics. Corroboree Athletics has got the same style and philosophy. Have fun and do your best,” says Ruud. And it’s this philosophy that makes the coaching experience truly fulfilling.

Proud Moments Aplenty

When it comes to proud moments, Ruud has a treasure trove. From seeing his own son become the Australian Champion in Pole Vault to guiding four junior relay teams at the Dutch Championships, and managing ALAC teams, the list goes on. But the real pride shines through when one of his athletes hits a personal best or wins a medal. “Above all are the smiling faces of the athletes (and parents) when they come back to me,” shares Ruud proudly. And how does he achieve such success? It’s a mix of seriousness, fun, and always pushing the athletes to be their best.

The Drive to Keep Going

What keeps Ruud going? It’s simple: the beaming faces of athletes succeeding in their events. Those moments of joy and triumph are the fuel that powers this dedicated coach.

Words of Wisdom for Developing Coaches

For those stepping into the coaching world, Ruud has some golden advice. “You can learn all the theoretical stuff out of books or the internet. But coaching is something you have to feel. Connect with the athletes, step in their shoes, and feel their emotions. Use your eyes and ears,” he advises. Understanding that there’s no one-size-fits-all solution is crucial—what works for one athlete might not work for another. Embrace mistakes, seek feedback, and constantly evaluate training sessions. And never hesitate to reach out to other coaches. “The majority are more than willing to help,” Coach Ruud emphasizes, recounting a recent experience learning from Australian Pole Vault legend Kym Simons.

Ruud’s Coaching Legacy

Ruud isn’t just shaping athletes; he’s shaping lives. With over 30 years of coaching experience in both the Netherlands and Australia, he has left an indelible mark on the athletics community. His blend of passion, expertise, and a genuine love for the sport and its athletes makes Ruud a true legend in the field. Here’s to many more years of smiles, personal bests, and unforgettable moments with Ruud leading the way!
