Leadership Transition at Capital Athletics
Published Fri 24 Jan 2025
Capital Athletics is pleased to announce a leadership change as part of its continued growth and commitment to athletics in the ACT.
At the Board Meeting held on 21 January 2024, Tim Christie stepped down as President and Director of Capital Athletics due to increased work commitments. Tim has served as the inaugural President since the organisation’s formation and has been instrumental in its development.
During his tenure, Tim played a key role in uniting Little Athletics ACT and Athletics ACT under one organisation, creating a stronger and more cohesive structure. He was pivotal in establishing a robust governance model and guiding the organisation through a period of stabilisation. Under his leadership, Capital Athletics introduced new systems and processes that have enabled us to operate effectively as one entity.
We extend our thanks to Tim for his significant contributions during this formative period and wish him well for the future.
The Board has elected James Lennane as the new President in accordance with our Constitution. James will serve in this role until the Annual General Meeting (AGM), where the position will go to election.
James brings extensive experience in financial management and community sports leadership, having held executive roles in both the public and private sectors. He is an active member of the athletics community as a long-term committee member at Corroboree Athletics, a Level 2 Athletics Australia Coach and the 2023–24 Community Coach of the Year.
James expressed his enthusiasm for the role, saying:
"I am honoured to step into the role of President of Capital Athletics. Tim has done a remarkable job in laying solid foundations, and I look forward to building on his work to further strengthen and grow athletics in the ACT. My immediate focus will be on connecting with the clubs and membership base to enhance opportunities for athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers and continuing to grow our community. Moving everyone forward together under the Capital Athletics banner will allow us to achieve great outcomes and build the future of our sport."
As James steps into this role, we look forward to his leadership in guiding our organisation through its next phase and supporting the continued development of athletics in the ACT.
